I think they're all supposed to be descendants of the original characters. I do wonder what ended up happening with Isaac and Alex, though. It is reasonable to assume Isaac is still alive whenever this is. Even in Lemuria, people lived for ridiculously long amounts of time, but Isaac is now living in a world where the lighthouses have been lit and he has part of the Golden Sun in him. I've been hoping/waiting for this game since the day I beat the lost age back in the day, so glad to see it's finally coming. I find it interesting that all the characters look different, except the one who looks very much like Issac. Perhaps that bit at the end of the second game about him having part of the golden suns power granted him a longer life, and Issac is indeed still a playable character in the third game. Just speculation, but I find he looks far too much like Issac, so much that I think that the developers were trying to drop a hint. This was definitely my favorite piece of news from this years E3.
