At the E3 today, Nintendo announced the first new Golden Sun game in six years! For those of you who don’t know what Golden Sun is, it’s a role-playing game that came out in 2001 originally, and had a sequel in 2003; both were for the Game Boy Advance. Up until now, there has been very little news of whether or not there will be a new game, aside from some comments in 2008 by Hiroyuki and Shugo Takahashi, two developers who work for Camelot, the group that created Golden Sun, that they’re very interested in working on another game for the series, and some fake news of the release of a third game in the series back in 2007.
However, with the announcement at the E3, there is no longer any doubt there will be a new game. It is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2010. Here’s the official description from Nintendo:
Golden Sun™ DS: After going dark six years ago, 2010 will see a new dawn. Golden Sun DS updates the popular portable Golden Sun role-playing series with an impressive graphical style. This installment follows the story of the previous heroes’ descendants and immerses players into the magic of its adventure by pushing the boundaries of intuitive touch-screen controls. Golden Sun DS is playable on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems.
Nintendo also has an official Golden Sun DS page, although it is likely only temporary given the page’s URL.
Currently there is only a limited amount of information available as it was just announced today, but there is some gameplay footage and a trailer from Nintendo. There are also some screenshots available on the website N-Europe.
Here’s a very impressive, official piece of art for the game (full version):
After all this time, I’m surprised Nintendo finally decided to make a third game for the series. I’m very happy they did, even if I might be in college when it finally comes out. It had better live up to my high expectations for it, especially since it’s taken so long to release!

Alex, long time no see.
The GS game sounds like a blast. I’ll have to mention it to Son.
Hey! I’ve been super-busy lately. I’ve got lots of ideas for posts, but I just haven’t had time.
I don’t know about the new one, but I sure hope so. I became a huge fan of the series back when I was 9 or 10. Even though I don’t really play any video games anymore, it’s like a part of my childhood, and I still think Isaac is so cool! D:
This was definitely my favorite piece of news from this years E3. I’ve been hoping/waiting for this game since the day I beat the lost age back in the day, so glad to see it’s finally coming. I find it interesting that all the characters look different, except the one who looks very much like Issac. Perhaps that bit at the end of the second game about him having part of the golden suns power granted him a longer life, and Issac is indeed still a playable character in the third game. Just speculation, but I find he looks far too much like Issac, so much that I think that the developers were trying to drop a hint.
The other two characters looks very much like Mia and Garet, too. I think they’re all supposed to be descendants of the original characters. I do wonder what ended up happening with Isaac and Alex, though.
It is reasonable to assume Isaac is still alive whenever this is. Even in Lemuria, people lived for ridiculously long amounts of time, but Isaac is now living in a world where the lighthouses have been lit and he has part of the Golden Sun in him. I don’t see how he could have passed away from old age.
