At my high school the sophomores, which includes myself, recently took a personality test online during what would have been our US History classes as some sort of indicator about colleges/careers we might consider for the future. For the test, I got INTJ as my personality type. I don’t know too much about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, but it seems like a bunch of nonsense.

Some things I take issue with are:

  • I’m the one taking the test, and I may write what I want to be like instead of what I am like. This seems to be the case for me, even though I tried to be objective. Either that, or most people who get their personality type back don’t really think about whether or not it’s actually true if it confirms what they already thought about themselves. (I just looked this up; it’s called the Forer effect.)
  • It’s very horoscope/fortune cookie-esque.
  • I don’t think such a simple test could very accurately describe a person’s personality.

There are other flaws in this, but I have to get back to my homework now if I want to sleep tonight.

Edit: SkepDic seems to confirm my doubts and is much more detailed in their article on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Now I’ll be getting back to homework. :P

    Welcome back from not blogging.

Also, sssshhhh…. Don’t say bad things about MBTI, or the touchy-feely Human Resources training people will come and take you away in the night.

Corporate America(TM) puts a lot of stock in getting people to work together by pigeonholing (cornholing?) people into these little categories. They like things that put you into quadrants, but MBTI’s nice little hexadecimality works just fine, too.

For what it’s worth, I always manipulate the results so that I’m INTP, and people who put stock in such things seem to agree. I’m also a Virgo born in the Year of the Dog, and I’m an Analytical. I’d like to see what happens if I manipulate so that I’m ESFJ, and then see if my peers all agree with that one, too.

Oh gosh, they’ll take me away? Thanks a lot, now I’ll have nightmares. :(

Sorry about not blogging. I try not to post too many entries unless there’s something I really want to write, and I’m also busy with tons of schoolwork and studying, even during my week long February vacation.
